In an effort to enhance public spaces, the Mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, is set to inaugurate four new parks in the townships of Tamanché, Sisilché, and Tehil on December 24th. This initiative aligns with her commitment to improving the quality of life for the residents of these townships.
In addition to the park inaugurations, several measures have been implemented by the Civil Protection Secretariat, the Municipal Police, and the National Defense Secretariat to ensure safety during the Christmas and end-of-year celebrations. These measures will be particularly focused on areas like the Historic Centre, a popular spot for holiday shopping, which is expected to attract over 400,000 visitors.
The Mayor also announced approved discounts for property tax payments, applicable to retirees, the elderly, and people with disabilities. These discounts can be availed from January 2nd, 2025. Moreover, prompt and full payment of property tax may also qualify taxpayers for a raffle with various prizes.
The municipal government has managed to save 150 million pesos, which will be allocated for public works such as street maintenance across various areas of Mérida. The plan includes the renovation of 43 streets in 23 neighborhoods and the allocation of 14 million pesos for the construction of wells and drains. These savings have been made possible due to budget adjustments following cuts from the state government.
The state Congress is currently considering a proposal for a re-plate service for cars and motorcycles, which, if approved, will include an early payment discount.
On the topic of fireworks usage, the Mayor clarified that the National Defense Secretariat, which is responsible for issuing permits for fireworks, will also monitor public spaces in collaboration with the Municipal Police and the Civil Protection Secretariat to ensure safety.
