FPMC Recognized for Saving 2,202 Sea Turtles

The annual meeting of the Committee for the Protection, Conservation, Research, and Management of the Sea Turtle of Quintana Roo was recently held on the Xcacel-Xcacelito beaches. Here, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), via the Punta Sur Turtle Camp, was recognized for its significant contributions to the protection of this iconic species during the 2024 season.

Ricardo Peralta Muñoz, who oversees the Punta Sur turtle camp, reported that they recorded 748 nests in 2024. Of these, 620 were of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and 128 of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). Both species are endangered and protected by the NOM-059-SEMARNAT.

The program's effectiveness was demonstrated by the release of 2,202 sea turtle hatchlings, including 2,100 green turtles and 102 loggerhead turtles. This achievement was the result of diligent monitoring and care.

In addition, 212 volunteers participated in various tasks such as monitoring, nest protection, and beach cleaning. They successfully removed 4,015 kilograms of waste brought to the coasts by the tide. These efforts improved the conditions of coastal ecosystems and contributed to the conservation of local fauna.

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the General Director of the FPMC, expressed satisfaction with the results and reaffirmed the institution's commitment to biodiversity. She noted that these achievements reflect the collective effort of society, volunteers, and authorities. She also emphasized that such actions strengthen the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, a program championed by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.

With over 35 years of experience, the FPMC has been a pioneer in the sea turtle protection program. Their work not only contributes to the survival of the species but also promotes environmental education and raises community awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources.

The successful 2024 season further establishes Quintana Roo as a leader in biodiversity and environmental care.
