Cozumel, Mexico — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) is calling on the community to participate in the seventh edition of the Emerald Hummingbird Festival, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Conservation and Environmental Education Center (CCEA), located on Avenida 65 in the industrial zone.

A Celebration of Cozumel’s Endemic Hummingbird

The annual festival aims to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the Cozumel emerald hummingbird (Chlorostilbon forficatus), one of the island’s most iconic endemic species. Beyond honoring this unique bird, the event seeks to foster public interest in birdwatching as a tool for learning about local biodiversity and its ecological significance.

Educational Workshops, Exhibitions, and Conservation Programs

Attendees of all ages can participate in workshops and attend lectures led by experts in avian conservation and environmental protection. The festival will also feature photographic, artisanal, and artistic exhibitions highlighting the beauty of the emerald hummingbird and Cozumel’s natural wealth.

The program includes workstations dedicated to key conservation initiatives overseen by the Conservation and Environmental Education Directorate (CEA), led by Rafael Chacón Díaz. Topics will cover marine turtle protection, reef fish conservation, coral restoration, and bird monitoring.

Additionally, an artistic exhibition by the Jóvenes por la Conservación (Youth for Conservation) group will showcase works inspired by the island’s flora and fauna, offering a reflective perspective on environmental challenges.

Aligning with Quintana Roo’s Environmental Vision

FPMC Director General Juanita Alonso Marrufo emphasized that the festival aligns with the New Agreement for Well-being and Development in Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama. The initiative underscores the need to educate future generations about environmental stewardship.

“The Emerald Hummingbird Festival is an opportunity to engage with scientific knowledge, appreciate Cozumel’s natural heritage, and strengthen the bond between the community and its environment,” Alonso Marrufo stated.

The FPMC invites all interested individuals to attend this family-friendly, educational event, which underscores the importance of preserving local wildlife.
