The Animal Welfare Department of Puerto Morelos, under the Secretary of Environment, Animal Welfare, and Sustainable Mobility, has initiated a free sterilization campaign for stray animals.
The primary goal of this campaign is to regulate the population of stray dogs and cats, thereby enhancing public health and animal welfare. "It's estimated that roughly one in every three dogs or cats in Mexico doesn't have a suitable home, equating to nearly 27 million animals living on the streets," stated the department head.
During the campaign's inaugural event, 40 animals were successfully sterilized, thanks to the assistance of seven Veterinary Zootechnicians (MVZ). The procedures took place at a clinic in Villas Morelos II. Additionally, the animals received deworming treatments donated by Mi Ranchito shop in Leona Vicario, and sextuple vaccines provided by Veterinaria del Puerto.
The department head expressed gratitude for the dedication of the participating MVZs. Future campaigns will continue to emphasize the importance of responsible pet adoption and proper pet care. They will also promote awareness of the Animal Welfare Law of the State of Quintana Roo. This law ensures animals are treated with dignity, safeguarding their health and preventing abuse, cruelty, and neglect. The ongoing sterilization and awareness campaigns aim to reinforce a culture of respect and care for animals within the municipality.
