The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) and the Planetarium of Cozumel Cha’an Ka’an are hosting a free workshop titled "What Fungus?". This event is aimed at children aged 8 to 11 and is designed to foster a connection with nature through learning about fungi. The workshop will take place on Saturday, February 1st, at the Center of Conservation and Environmental Education (CCEA).

The FPMC Director, Juanita Alonso Marrufo, stated that Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa is keen on supporting such initiatives. She believes that educating children about their natural environment and its protection is critical for building a future where conservation and growth go hand in hand.

Rafael Chacón Díaz, the Director of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), shared that the workshop will feature an informative talk by biologist Yazlin Marrufo Novelo, who is also the director of the Planetarium Cha’an Ka’an. The talk will cover the general characteristics of fungi, their classification, their role in nature, and the species found on the island.

Following the talk, there will be a guided tour along the CCEA's environmental interpretation trail. This will give the children a chance to apply their newfound knowledge and identify some of the fungi species that inhabit the site and are visible at this time of the year. This experience is expected to spark greater interest in the kingdom of fungi among the participants.

Chacón Díaz added that each activity will be supported by the biologists and natural resource managers of the FPMC, who will be available to answer any questions and clear any doubts.

Children aged 8 to 11 are invited to participate in the "What Fungus?" workshop, which will start at 10:00 am on February 1st. To register, call 987-112-9791.
