Sea-to-Table Program Brings Fresh Fish to Rural Communities in Lázaro Cárdenas

Three older adults, two men and one woman, stand together smiling at a local market under a metal shelter. The man in the center is wearing a dark polo shirt, and the others hold basins with fresh fish, expressing contentment and pride.

In Lázaro Cárdenas, the municipal president Nivardo Mena has launched a unique food program titled "From the Sea to Your Table". The program aims to deliver fish to families residing in rural communities, with the goal of enhancing their dietary habits.

The initiative began in the community of El Ideal, where Mena distributed over a ton of fish to the local residents. Following this, he visited the town of El Cedralito to continue the seafood delivery. The distribution of fish in rural areas is a relatively new concept, as these populations are typically far from the coast. However, Mena is committed to making marine products more accessible to these communities. "We want all families to improve their diet. This program is now official and will gradually reach all communities", he stated.

Many families expressed their gratitude towards Mayor Nivardo Mena for including them in the program. They believe that the delivery of fish will help diversify their children's daily diet. Wendy Pool, a local resident, thanked the mayor and acknowledged his ongoing efforts to provide fish to the most disadvantaged families. "We know that fish is expensive, especially because we do not have a sea in this area, but we thank the municipal president for giving us these products", she said.
