Fyre Festival 2 Moves to Playa del Carmen—But Is It Real?

Fyre Festival is back—or so says Billy McFarland. The convicted fraudster behind 2017’s infamous festival fiasco is promoting Fyre Festival 2, now slated to take place from May 30 to June 2, 2025, in Playa del Carmen. But after months of vague promises, inflated ticket prices, and zero transparency, many are asking: is this event real or just another elaborate scam?

Originally announced for Isla Mujeres, the event was marketed as a high-end experience, complete with exclusive resort stays and a million-dollar VIP package. But there was one glaring problem: authorities and hotels on the island had no idea it was happening.

Isla Mujeres officials quickly denied involvement, saying no permits had been requested and no event had been approved. Promoters had even named luxury hotels like the Mia Reef and Zoëtry Villa Rolandi as partner venues—without their knowledge. Local authorities were quick to confirm that no permissions or permits has been requested or given for this multi-day event.

Now the festival’s website points to Playa del Carmen as the new location, citing a beachfront venue called “Playa FYRE.” Promotional materials show a sleek festival featuring music, comedy, fashion, sports, and even “treasure hunting.” But again, details are scarce, and local businesses and hotels reportedly listed as partners say they have not signed on.

Sources say McFarland is trying to involve Grupo Némesis and the Maroma hotel—neither of which have confirmed any affiliation. Meanwhile, basic entry tickets are being sold online for $1,400 per person, with “VIP” experiences reaching $1.1 million for a group of eight.

Despite the hype, very little is known about the lineup, location, or logistics. The festival’s vague offerings, combined with McFarland’s criminal record and a history of making false claims, have raised red flags among both tourists and locals.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Travelers are urged to err on the side of caution before spending a single peso.

For now, Fyre Festival 2 feels like déjà vu—only this time, it’s Playa del Carmen’s reputation on the line.
