The Gran Fondo New York (GFNY) Cozumel 2024 is not just a highly anticipated cycling event. It's also a significant economic driver for the island. The event is expected to attract over three thousand cyclists from 56 countries, generating economic revenue of more than seven million dollars. This figure includes spending by competitors and the thousands of visitors who come to the island to enjoy the competition and other attractions in Cozumel.
The projected revenue for 2024 is based on the success of the previous event, which brought in over 160 million pesos. This year, the event is expected to draw even more visitors. Each competitor is likely to bring an average of three companions, potentially bringing the total number of visitors to over 15,000 during the event weekend. As a result, hotel occupancy rates are expected to rise above 80%, providing a much-needed boost to the tourism sector following a challenging low season.
The influx of visitors is crucial for the local economy, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. It also helps to solidify Cozumel's reputation as "The Island of Sport".
To ensure the best possible experience for participants, significant improvements have been made to the island's road infrastructure. Investments have been made in road repairs and vegetation pruning along a 28-kilometer stretch of the south coastal road. These enhancements aim to provide an optimal circuit for the GFNY Cozumel.
The GFNY Cozumel isn't just for adults. The event also includes a competition for younger cyclists, the GFNY Kids. This event offers children from various categories the chance to experience long-distance cycling. It encourages participation from the children of professional competitors and local youth interested in the sport, fostering a love of the sport in the next generation.
