Cancún Beaches Ban Glass Containers for Environmental Protection

A discarded glass jar with a faded label partially buried in the sandy beach, hinting at environmental neglect

The Benito Juárez Municipal Council has approved a reform to ban glass objects on Cancún's beaches. This initiative, led by councilor Eduardo Kuyoc Rodríguez, aims to maintain and potentially increase the number of blue flag distinctions awarded to the municipality's beaches. These awards are given in recognition of high environmental and safety standards.

The new rule stipulates fines for anyone found bringing glass onto the beaches. Penalties can range from 10 to 60 times the daily value of the Measure and Update Unit, or a detention of 24 to 36 hours. The primary aim of this measure is to safeguard the marine ecosystem, as well as ensure the safety of both residents and tourists who frequent Cancún's beaches.
