The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) is set to host the Oracle of the Goddess Ixchel event as part of the Sacred Journey 2025 on May 16th and 17th. The event is a celebration of cultural heritage and aims to boost cultural tourism.
The Oracle of the Goddess Ixchel is a symbolic ritual that harks back to the ancient Mayan pilgrimage to the island of Cozumel. The Mayans revered the Goddess Ixchel, the deity of the moon, fertility, love, and medicine. They would travel by canoe to the island, bearing offerings and seeking her divine message, which they would then bring back to their communities amidst grand celebrations.
Juanita Alonso Marrufo, the general director of the FPMC, announced that this year's reenactment will take place on the night of May 16th. The event will be held in the mystical lagoon of the Chankanaab Natural Park, where more than 80 artists and tradition bearers will recreate the anticipated Oracle of the Goddess Ixchel.
