“Google Maps Boosting Tourism: Tulum Airport Updates & Travel Module”

Google Maps is celebrating its 15th anniversary by showcasing its impact on economic and tourism growth in the regions where it operates. During an event in Mexico City, Google highlighted how its platform and search engine are enhancing user experiences, particularly in southeast Mexico, including areas like the Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, and Merida, Yucatán.

One key initiative is the mapping of the new Tulum airport. Google Maps has incorporated the latest aerial and satellite imagery, featuring essential points of interest such as parking lots, terminals, and Fixed Base Operators (FBOs). This undertaking ensures that travelers enjoy a rich experience and can navigate the airport effectively. Additionally, digital adjustments have been made to provide optimal routes, avoid dirt roads, and offer more accurate time estimates.

Google Maps frequently partners with local governments to update public transportation information. In Mérida, it has collaborated with the Yucatán Transport Agency (ATY) to integrate public transportation services into the platform. This integration enables users to access routes, schedules, travel times, frequency, and necessary directions on both desktop and mobile devices.

Working with the SURGES project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Google has trained small and medium-sized tourism businesses in south-southeast Mexico. The aim of this training is to optimize their digital presence and business profiles. To date, over 1,500 businesses from the region have been added to Google Maps, enhancing their visibility and making their services more accessible.

This year, Google introduced a Travel Module, integrated into both the search engine and Google Maps. This innovative feature allows users to easily find, compare, and select bus routes between cities. Now, travelers can use the search engine to access travel ticket sales platforms or quickly locate transportation service providers.

Google Maps continues to be a vital tool for boosting tourism in Quintana Roo and other regions of southeast Mexico, simplifying life for both residents and visitors.
