The Day of the Dead, one of Mexico's most significant celebrations, is known as Hanal Pixán in the Yucatán peninsula. Quintana Roo has recognized Hanal Pixán as a chance to boost tourism. The festival has gained more prominence than the widely recognized Day of the Dead celebrations in central Mexico. It has also become a unique opportunity for family gatherings, celebrating traditions, food, and honoring the deceased. Both private and public sectors have successfully spotlighted this celebration that was once overlooked. Now, there are locations where the festival has been celebrated for nearly two decades, and tour operators are even promoting the "souls' dinner" parties as an attraction.
Currently, five Hanal Pixán celebrations are drawing attention throughout the state and across Mexico. These include the renowned Festival of Traditions of Life and Death at Xcaret, Hanal Pixán in the Corn Village in Cozumel, Hanal Pixán in Puerto Juárez in Cancún, Hanal Pixán Light and Life on Isla Mujeres, and the altar exhibition at the ExpoFer in Chetumal.
Festival of Traditions of Life and Death at Xcaret
Taking place from 30th October to 3rd November, the 18th edition of the Life and Death Festival is one of the most recognized in the country. It attracts about 20,000 visitors per day who participate in activities such as food tasting, traditional and cultural events, and gala concerts. This year, Reik and Silvana Estrada will be performing. Each year, the festival features a guest state, and in 2024, due to the 50th anniversary of Quintana Roo as a Free and Sovereign State, the year of Hanal Pixán will be celebrated across the Mayan areas of the north, center, and south of the state.
Hanal Pixán in The Corn Village (El Pueblo del Maíz)
From 31st October to 2nd November, the Corn Village in Cozumel will host its eighth Hanal Pixán celebration. The event includes three daily presentations where attendees can engage directly with the pre-Hispanic village and participate in activities such as preparing traditional foods like pib, tamales, and chocolates. Pre-Hispanic rituals are also performed, offering a deeper connection to the period before colonization.
Hanal Pixán Puerto Juárez
Held from 31st October to 3rd November, this event, which originated in downtown Cancún, has grown to be one of the most important celebrations in the municipality. One of the main attractions is the arrival of the Catrinas and Catrines in boats to the shore of Puerto Juárez, followed by a parade along the main avenue. The event also features a display of traditional food from the area, contests, musical and artistic presentations, and free public transport.
Hanal Pixán Light and Life on Isla Mujeres
From 29th October to 2nd November, Isla Mujeres hosts the first edition of the Light and Life Festival. The week-long event includes activities such as sugar skull contests, costume contests, Day of the Dead altar contests, religious events, and concerts by Kika Edgar and Miriam Montemayor.
Hanal Pixán at the ExpoFer in Chetumal
On 1st and 2nd November, as part of the 50th anniversary of Quintana Roo, the traditional ExpoFer will be held at Quintana Roo Park. The event will feature an exhibition of Day of the Dead altars, with space provided for Mayan altars in representation of Hanal Pixán.
