While many people cherish their pets, there are unfortunate instances where they are abandoned. A recent incident in Merida, Yucatan, involved a woman allegedly leaving her dog on a busy highway before speeding away. This shocking event was reported on social media, where it was stated that the woman left the dog to fend for itself on the road.
Despite several attempts by onlookers to dissuade her, the woman ignored their pleas and left the dog on the street before fleeing. The social media post stated, "We tried to stop her and make her understand the gravity of her actions, but she claimed the dog wasn't hers. It was obvious the dog was hers as it was following her and looking for her. People need to be more considerate towards animals." It was also reported that the dog ran off and was lost due to the heavy traffic on the highway.
Local news outlets reported that witnesses called the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), but no one arrived at the scene. To report animal abuse in Yucatan, the Attorney General's Office (FGE) advises filing a complaint in person, as social media is not an official channel for complaints. The FGE recommends visiting the unit specializing in domestic abuse crimes, bringing official identification, a photograph of the animal, and the correct address of the incident. For further guidance, the FGE can be reached at (999) 930 32 50.

- Self-evaluation: Assess if you have the time, resources, and commitment to care for a dog.
- Research: Learn about different breeds, their temperaments, needs, and the size suitable for your lifestyle and space.
- Home preparation: Ensure you have a safe and comfortable space for the dog, including areas for sleeping, playing, and relieving themselves.
- Budget: Consider the costs of feeding, veterinary care, vaccinations, grooming services, and other supplies.
- Time and attention: Determine if you can dedicate daily time for walks, exercise, and activities to keep your dog healthy and happy.
- Veterinary consultation: Find a trusted vet for regular check-ups and advice on your future dog's health.
- Education and training: Be prepared to invest time in basic training and proper dog behavior for a harmonious coexistence.
