Floods Wipe Out Pumpkin & Corn Crops in José María Morelos

Recent heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding in the agricultural regions of José María Morelos, resulting in the loss of approximately 25 hectares of chihua pumpkin and 14 hectares of corn crops. This devastating impact was primarily felt in the community of La Candelaria.

Sebastian Vela Gongora, the local commissioner, stated that despite the cessation of rains, the crops are still waterlogged. The intense heat that followed the rains has likely caused the crops to rot. The second planting of corn and the chihua pumpkin crops were particularly affected. Only those farmers who planted early were able to salvage a portion of their harvest.

Farmers are now faced with the challenge of replanting their crops, with the hope that another weather system will not bring further floods. "We have to start from scratch and plant again. Hopefully, we won't experience another flood that could lead to another total loss," Gongora remarked.
