HISTORICAL SHIFT: Solidaridad Municipality Prepares for Name Change Craze

In a landmark decision, the Solidaridad City Council voted overwhelmingly in favor of initiating a process to change the municipality's name. The proposal, approved by 15 votes to one, will now be forwarded to the State Congress of Quintana Roo for further scrutiny and potential approval. The council meeting, held in the Leona Vicario room of the new Municipal Palace, saw a turnout of citizens with diverse opinions. While some voiced their support for the proposed change, others demonstrated their disagreement through protest banners. Despite the differing views, the debate was conducted in a civil manner.

Councilman José Luis Toledo Medina was the sole dissenting vote, having expressed his opposition to the name change from the beginning. However, the majority of the council backed the proposal, marking a significant step in this process of municipal identity transformation.

Mayor of Solidaridad, Estefanía Mercado, clarified that the proposal is merely an initiative and not the actual name change. The final decision will be made by the State Congress.

One of the primary reasons for supporting the name change is to bolster Playa del Carmen's global recognition as a tourist destination. Furthermore, Mercado assured that the change would not result in additional costs for the residents. She explained that existing official documents would remain valid and changes to stationery, patrols, and signage would occur gradually as current supplies are depleted.

The fate of the name change now rests with the State Congress of Quintana Roo, which will review the proposal before making a decision. As the process continues, the debate among citizens and political figures remains active, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome of this potentially historic change for Solidaridad.
