Cancún, Mexico — The 2025 Holy Week commenced in Cancún with traditional Palm Sunday observances, marking the start of a series of religious and cultural events across the city. Thousands of faithful gathered for Masses and processions, carrying palm fronds in commemoration of Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Religious Services Draw Large Crowds

Local parishes, including the Cristo Resucitado and Guadalupe churches, reported high attendance as worshippers participated in morning and evening services. The Diocese of Cancún-Chetumal emphasized the significance of the day, with Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas presiding over a special Mass at the Cancún Cathedral.

“Palm Sunday invites us to reflect on humility and service, values that are more necessary than ever in our society,” said Bishop Elizondo in his homily.

Processions and Cultural Events

Following the religious ceremonies, processions wound through downtown Cancún, with participants holding intricately woven palm crosses. The municipal government organized family-friendly activities, including workshops on traditional crafts and live performances of regional music.

Authorities deployed additional security personnel to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety, particularly around major churches and procession routes.

Tourism Expected to Surge

With Holy Week being one of Mexico’s busiest travel periods, Cancún’s hotels and resorts reported near-full occupancy. The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat anticipates over 500,000 visitors during the holiday period, bolstering the local economy.

“We’ve prepared a diverse program that respects religious traditions while offering recreational options for all ages,” said Marisol Vanegas Pérez, the state’s tourism secretary.

Upcoming Holy Week Events

The schedule includes:

  • Holy Thursday (April 17): Mass of the Lord’s Supper and visits to the “Seven Houses” altars.
  • Good Friday (April 18): Stations of the Cross reenactments along Tulum Avenue.
  • Holy Saturday (April 19): Easter Vigil services.
  • Easter Sunday (April 20): Sunrise celebrations at Playa Delfines.

Municipal officials urged residents and visitors to follow traffic advisories and respect safety guidelines during the festivities.
