Home Depot Mexico Accused of Donating Spoiled Goods

The Kodomo A.C. Therapeutic Center for Child Development in Playa del Carmen has reported receiving a donation of substandard materials from The Home Depot Mexico. The donation, reportedly worth 100,000 pesos, was found to include spoiled paint, empty cans, and rusty containers, leading the center to return the items and cancel the related tax receipt.

The donation was delivered on December 6th by the Home Depot branch in Playa del Carmen. The center stated that the donated paint was rotten and unusable, presenting a potential health risk to the children due to the strong odor and potentially toxic compounds found in decomposing paint. The center also reported that over 70 items that were previously agreed upon were not included in the delivery.

Environmental health experts warn that exposure to spoiled paint can cause respiratory irritation, nausea, headaches, and in severe cases, chemical poisoning. This poses a particular risk to children, especially those with autism, who may be more sensitive to strong odors and chemical compounds.

The aim of the donation was to improve the facilities at the center, which serves children with autism. However, due to the poor quality of the donated items, Kodomo decided to return the materials. The center has also requested that Home Depot Mexico refrain from using any images or information related to the donation in its promotional materials.

Kodomo A.C. has reiterated its commitment to transparency and expressed gratitude to the Playa del Carmen community for their continued support. As of now, The Home Depot Mexico has not responded to these allegations. This incident underscores the need for companies to ensure the quality and appropriateness of their donations, particularly when they are intended for organizations serving vulnerable populations.
