A shocking incident of animal cruelty involving a horse-drawn carriage has sparked outrage among the residents of Mérida and various organizations advocating for the termination of this type of tourism. The horse was seen being hit in the face, particularly near the eye, causing it visible pain. The incident has raised concerns about the potential for serious injury to both the horse and the person involved, if the horse were to react out of desperation.

The Union of Drivers and Small Owners of Carriages in Yucatán, however, is also strongly against such abuse. They maintain that they have been providing training for over a decade to ensure horses are well cared for. They insist that the animals are kept comfortable, well-nourished, and regularly examined by veterinarians. The incident, which was widely shared on social media, led to the expulsion of the offending member, as the union has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of animal cruelty.

The union expressed deep regret over the incident, stating, "We are deeply saddened by the events that transpired on Saturday. It is a deplorable act and we cannot condone such behavior. It is clear that this was an act of abuse. We made the decision to permanently expel the member involved."

The Municipality of Mérida, through the Animal Protection Unit of the Municipal Police, has taken charge of the case and the horse is now under their protection.
