The Crystal Hotel, situated on the shores of the seven-color lagoon in Bacalar, has been shut down by city officials. This drastic action was taken after a van associated with the hotel fell into the lagoon. An investigation is currently underway to determine if the incident has caused any environmental harm.
On the morning of Monday, February 10, a white van with license plates UVV-100-J, owned by the Crystal Hotel, plunged into the Bacalar lagoon. The city council has swiftly responded to the incident, vowing to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
The city council stated, "Upon receiving the report, staff from the Civil Protection, Ecology, and Fines departments of the municipality promptly arrived at the scene, located on the South Coastal Boulevard at the Crystal Hotel. It was confirmed that a van had indeed fallen into the lagoon."
Further investigation revealed that the hotel's documentation was not in order, leading to its closure. The city council is also investigating to establish responsibility for the incident. They have assured the public that appropriate penalties will be applied.
The city council also mentioned, "Investigations have begun to assess the potential damage to the lagoon system. This includes any oil spill, gasoline, or any other substance that could have serious effects on the lagoon, which is the municipality's main natural attraction."
