“Revolutionary Hotel Plan Saves Akumal Bay from Erosion!”

Akumal Bay, located in Solidaridad, loses approximately 11 meters of sand annually due to natural erosion and human activities. In an effort to address this issue, hotels such as Grand Oasis Akumal have proposed a beach restoration plan to the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) within their leased areas. The proposed project involves the creation of artificial dunes in two sections, utilizing a geotextile core to stabilize the shifting sands that are characteristic of the region.

Extensive studies have been conducted in the affected areas, encompassing a variety of analyses of both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) elements. The proposed plan also includes a revegetation strategy for the dune cord and dune passages, as well as the construction of a rustic wooden walkway to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation processes.

As of now, Semarnat has not yet initiated a public consultation on the project. However, such a consultation would be launched if requested by any member of the public.
