A police operation led to a grim discovery this afternoon. Officers from the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) found a deceased individual in a cenote, a natural sinkhole, located on the city outskirts. The operation initially aimed to apprehend suspected hitmen but ended up uncovering a case now under investigation.
According to the official report, the police were in pursuit of a group of suspects who had reportedly fired shots at a suburban cocktail bar in Cancun just minutes before. During their search of the surrounding area, the officers detected a strong, unpleasant odor coming from a cenote. This prompted them to conduct a more thorough inspection.
Upon closer examination, the officers confirmed the presence of a body in an advanced state of decomposition. They immediately cordoned off the area and established a security perimeter. The State Attorney General's Office and the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) were notified to initiate the necessary procedures.
The identity of the victim and the exact circumstances surrounding their death remain unknown at this time, pending the results of the forensic investigation.
