Hurricane Helene Devastates Isla Mujeres’ Coral Reefs

The aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left Isla Mujeres' coral reefs in a state of distress. The storm not only impacted the reefs but also the island's tourist infrastructure, with winds exceeding 90 km/h. The extent of the damage will be assessed once the waters in the Isla Contoy National Park clear.

Ixlaché reef, already severely damaged by Hurricane Grace in 2021, is of particular concern. The National Marine Park Western Coast of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún, and Punta Nizuc are also evaluating the impact on key reef sites, including Manchones, Garrafón, and Chitales.

Hurricane Helene's impact extends beyond the coral reefs. The storm caused significant coastal erosion, churning up beach sand and toppling large rocks that served as coral nurseries. The ecological balance of the region is now in a critical state due to these environmental changes.
