In Benito Juarez, a district of Mexico, approximately 60 police officers are currently under investigation by the Directorate of Internal Affairs of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC). The majority of these investigations are in response to accusations of authority abuse. However, it is expected that most of these cases will not be resolved within the year.
In addition to the ongoing investigations, 20 officers have been dismissed from their duties. Six of these dismissals were due to allegations of sexual abuse. The officers in question have been referred to the State Attorney General's Office (FGE).
Department sources reveal that the dismissals resulted from citizen complaints, including reports of authority abuse and theft. Meanwhile, around 60 police officers are under review by the Honor and Justice Council for potential violations of internal regulations. Some officers have been arrested for actions deemed "not severe".
A public survey conducted in the city reveals a prevailing sense of distrust towards the police. One respondent, Mateo, a public transport driver, commented, "Those are the ones we have to protect ourselves from, sometimes they scare us more than the thieves."
This sentiment is not exclusive to Cancun, but is echoed across the country. Citizens have lost faith in the police due to their misconduct and increasing involvement with organized crime. Pilar Rojas, another respondent, expressed her uncertainty, "We cannot know, whether those police officers patrolling your neighborhood are good elements or are the bad ones, in truth it does not give me a good feeling when I see them where I live. I know that not all are like this, but how can we know?”
