The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is a prime suspect in the murder of Captain José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, head of the Tulum Citizen Security Secretariat. The captain had reportedly refused to assist the cartel in their bid to control Tulum, a region currently under the influence of the Caborca cartel.
Naval intelligence officers are now in Tulum, focusing on this theory as they work to identify those responsible for the death of the secretary and licensed officer of the Mexican Navy.
Captain Rodríguez Bautista was killed by three bullets from the over 17 fired at him. One hit his leg, another his back, and the fatal shot struck his chest. He was not wearing his bulletproof vest at the time and was in an unarmored, insured vehicle, which ultimately contributed to his death.
The source of the vehicle he was using before the attack remains unknown, as do the reasons for his use of it. This information could be crucial in identifying those behind the suspected betrayal that led to his death.
After leaving his office one evening in March, he headed to his private home in the La Veleta area of Tulum. Another factor that may have reduced his chances of survival was the lack of multiple officers escorting him; he was only accompanied by his personal driver, also a licensed member of the Mexican Navy.
High-level sources suggest that Rodríguez Bautista had an impeccable record and had refused to be drawn into the payroll of the CJNG. This cartel, in alliance with Los Chapito, aims to control Tulum by recruiting senior police chiefs, thereby wresting control from the current Caborca cartel.
A suspicious meeting with a senior police official after a shooting at the Quintana Roo Prosecutor's Office could provide further insight into the investigation.
Unverified reports suggest that Rodríguez Bautista had shared extensive data on the CJNG's activities in the Riviera Maya area. Unbeknownst to him, sharing this information with someone he thought was fighting organized crime in Tulum would cost him his life. Initial investigations suggest that this information, along with his personal details, may have been leaked to the cartel, sealing his fate.
Throughout his career, Rodríguez Bautista held various roles in public security and intelligence, including leading an intelligence analysis group in the Marine Secretariat in Monterrey, Nuevo León, and serving as the head of the Police.
