Shocking Assault by Cancún Officer: Investigation Launched

The Benito Juárez Municipality's Department of Citizen Security and Traffic, along with the State Attorney's Office (FGE), have begun proceedings against a traffic officer who assaulted a citizen. The incident took place after a Mexican Baseball League game between Tigres and Pericos.

Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández, Acting Head of the Municipal Presidency of Benito Juárez, announced that the officer has been dismissed for abuse of authority. He described the incident as unfortunate, explaining that a driver under the influence had refused to comply with the officer's instructions and created an unacceptable situation. The officer has been dismissed and the matter is now being handled by Internal Affairs.

Fernández emphasized that such behavior will not be tolerated from department members. He urged officers of the Department of Citizen Security and Municipal Traffic to adhere to protocols in their duties to avoid future penalties.

He further explained that any officer misconduct is reported to the Internal Affairs Department, which then initiates investigations. Fernández also urged the public to exercise caution when driving in the municipality and to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

The FGE also announced that it has launched a separate investigation into the incident, focusing on the crimes of abuse of authority and assault. They stated that the Prosecution Specialized in Combating Crimes Committed by Public Servants and Torture will conduct inquiries to clarify the process and proceed according to law, regardless of the officer's dismissal and the ongoing internal investigation within his institution. The FGE reiterated that such actions by members of the Municipal Traffic Department are illegal.
