Authorities from the regional Deputy Attorney General's Office in Escárcega, Campeche are investigating a devastating accident between a trailer and an Acosta line bus. The collision, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the municipality of Carmen, is believed to have resulted in approximately 30 fatalities, including children.

As of Saturday morning, February 8, the wreckage of the trailer and bus remained at the 171-kilometer mark of the federal Escárcega – Villahermosa highway, near the Vista Alegre community in Carmen. This has caused disruptions to vehicular traffic.

Meanwhile, the Acosta bus line has announced via social media that it has arranged for buses to transport relatives of the passengers to the Candelaria Prosecutor's Office in the municipality of Candelaria, Campeche. The accident report is being compiled by the National Guard, who were the first responders, and will subsequently be handed over to the Public Ministry.

The investigating authorities will be looking into the cause of the collision. Unofficial sources suggest that the trailer may have veered into the bus's lane.

While an official account is yet to be released, various sources indicate that there were 40 people on the bus. It is believed that 10 individuals may have managed to escape the wreckage, albeit with injuries or burns.

The crash, which resulted in both vehicles catching fire within seconds, occurred around 1 a.m. The high number of casualties is thought to include both the drivers and their passengers. According to posts related to the Acosta bus line, the bus had departed from Cancun at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 7, en route to Comalcalco, Tabasco.
