Residents and tourists in Playa del Carmen were treated to the rare sight of an iridescent cloud, a spectacle that was quickly shared across social media. This particular type of cloud, known as a cumulonimbus, grows vertically and refracts sunlight through its peak of ice crystals, resulting in a breathtaking display.
Meteorologist Luis Antonio Morales Ocaña explained that these clouds often exhibit electrical activity in their lower regions. The iridescent cloud phenomenon is a rare occurrence that requires specific conditions. The clouds must be made up of water droplets or ice crystals of a uniform size, which allows sunlight to pass through at just the right angle.
Furthermore, the clouds need to be thin enough for their colors to be visible. These can range from soft pastel shades to vibrant hues of red, orange, green, blue, and violet. In Playa del Carmen, this event was primarily seen in altocumulus and cirrocumulus clouds, although it can also occur in lenticular clouds. However, it is less common in cirrus type clouds.
Witnesses shared that to fully appreciate the beauty of the cloud, one needed to view the sky from certain angles, either by blocking the sun with a building or using dark glasses. Numerous photographs of the sky were taken and shared on social media, where they quickly gained popularity.
The iridescent cloud serves as a testament to the intricate and fascinating natural processes that take place in our atmosphere. With its tropical landscapes, Playa del Carmen provides an ideal setting for weather enthusiasts and photographers to experience such phenomena.
In related news, a solar halo was spotted in Cancun earlier this week, further demonstrating the region's capacity for natural beauty. Despite its rarity, the residents of the Riviera Maya are reminded that nature continues to surprise with its extraordinary displays.
