Isla Mujeres' reputation as a tourist destination is under threat due to the announcement of Fyre Fest II. This proposed music festival, featuring electronic, hip hop, pop, and rock genres, is set to take place from May 30th to June 2nd on a "private island". However, the festival's founder, Billy McFarland, has a history of fraud. In 2017, he deceived thousands of attendees at the original Fyre Fest in the Bahamas, where half the bands cancelled and the accommodation and food services were subpar. McFarland was imprisoned for fraud in 2018 and released in 2022. Despite this, he is promoting Fyre Fest II in Isla Mujeres, to the surprise and disbelief of those aware of his past.
The City Council has stated that no person or company has sought permits from the Tourism Directorate or any other municipal agency for Fyre Fest II. It remains unclear whether the municipal government would refuse permits if they were requested later, given that the supposed festival is still three months away.
In media interviews and posts by influencers, McFarland insists that Fyre Fest II is real and tickets are available on his official website. Prices range from $1,400 for a basic single-person ticket to $1.1 million for an eight-person package. This high-priced package, named Prometheus God of Fire, allegedly includes access to the festival grounds, a private chauffeur service, on-site concierge, and more.
Despite tickets being on sale, no activities or musical performances have been announced. McFarland claims he has already sold 100 tickets at $500 each, with the remainder to be sold between $1,400 and $1.1 million.
In a September 2024 interview with NBC News, McFarland stated that Fyre Fest II would take place from April 25-28, 2025, and expected to attract three thousand attendees. Tickets were even sold for these dates at the same prices as the May 30th to June 2nd event. Interestingly, in September, McFarland claimed these tickets were already sold out.
McFarland asserts that Fyre Fest II will be held on a private island in Isla Mujeres. In an interview with People magazine, he mentioned that the festival would feature electronic music, hip hop, pop and rock bands, as well as skateboarding and Mixed Martial Arts demonstrations. However, no artists have been announced on the festival's website.
Negative comments about the festival have already surfaced in foreign community groups, with many labeling Fyre Fest II as a potential scam.
