A well-known restaurant on Isla Mujeres was abruptly shut down by Civil Protection inspectors last Friday due to a lack of necessary safety permits. The Leidy palapa restaurant, situated in the popular North Beach area, was sealed off over the weekend by both Civil Protection and local Firefighters. This action resulted in approximately 20 staff members being sent home.
The restaurant, a beloved fixture in the North Beach community, was reportedly closed for failing to secure approval from Civil Protection for safe business operations. Since Friday, the establishment has remained inaccessible to the public, with security seals and tape barring entry at all entrances.
Rumors of corruption have been circulating in relation to the closure, with some suggesting that the incident is not as straightforward as it appears. An anonymous employee of the restaurant has hinted at an ongoing property dispute involving the establishment. Allegedly, one of the parties involved in this dispute has close connections with the municipal government.
Despite undergoing a comprehensive inspection by various officials, the restaurant was reported to have no irregularities prior to the arrival of Civil Protection, who subsequently sealed off the premises. As of now, the restaurant remains closed and has been since July 26, 2024.
