The municipality of Isla Mujeres is taking steps to make its beaches more inclusive. Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde revealed on Tuesday that three amphibious chairs have been donated to the island's beaches to accommodate visitors with disabilities.
The refurbished chairs are intended for use at Playa Centro and Playa Norte. The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote inclusivity on Isla Mujeres' beaches. The local government, in collaboration with the Teletón Children's Rehabilitation and Inclusion Center (CRIT) and the Comprehensive Family Development System (DIF) of Isla Mujeres, delivered the amphibious chairs to the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of Isla Mujeres.
The donation coincided with International Human Rights Day, and was part of a collaboration agreement signed by the City Council of Isla Mujeres, CRIT Quintana Roo, and DIF Isla Mujeres. The agreement aims to promote inclusivity and contribute to the advancement of the Inclusive Beaches Program.
The Mayor, alongside Paolo Sergio Montero Jáquez, Director of CRIT, and the Honorary President of DIF Isla Mujeres, presented the refurbished amphibious chairs. These chairs will enable individuals with mobility impairments to safely and comfortably enjoy the island's beaches.
Mayor Ricalde expressed her belief in a government that takes action and serves with compassion. She stated that the initiative is part of the municipality's commitment to social justice and equal opportunities for all, aiming to establish Playa Centro and Playa Norte as inclusive spaces.
The Mayor encouraged residents who require the amphibious chairs to request them free of charge at the Zofemat service modules at Playa Centro and Playa Norte, available from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
This initiative aligns with the New Advancement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, a campaign led by State Governor, María Lezama Espinosa, which prioritizes the needs of vulnerable groups in decision-making processes.
