The Isla Mujeres Local Livestock Association recently held its annual meeting, marking significant progress for the sector. This included the addition of six new farmers from the rural community of Francisco May. This development reinforces the union's presence and demonstrates that Isla Mujeres is not only a tourist destination, but also a crucial hub for livestock farming in Quintana Roo.
Rosa Agustina Zapata Arias, the president of the Local Livestock Association, emphasized the diverse range of livestock activities in the region. These include the rearing of over 200 cattle, more than 150 sheep, as well as goats, laying hens, and beekeeping. Notably, the women in the Livestock Association have successfully initiated a buffalo breeding program.
The meeting was attended by state and municipal authorities who reiterated their support for the livestock sector. Among the attendees were Dennis Marín Vázquez, Undersecretary of Agriculture for the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), Municipal Agent José Aguilar Rodríguez, and Councillor Opalina Flores González. Jorge Martín Álvarez and Sergio Crisanto Mortero, president of the Regional Livestock Union, also contributed to the discussions.
These developments underscore the growing importance of livestock farming in Isla Mujeres. It continues to solidify its position as a vital part of the local economy, illustrating that agriculture and livestock production are key factors in the municipality's development.
