“Biggest Fishing Tournament in Isla Mujeres – Win Prizes Worth 850K Pesos!”

The 19th International Sport Fishing Tournament, "Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña", is set to take place in Isla Mujeres in 2024. With a prize pool exceeding 850,000 pesos, the event is expected to draw over 3,000 participants and spectators, including both local and international fishing enthusiasts.

Edwin Noh Amaro, the Director of Tourism in the municipality, emphasizes that the main aim of the event is to preserve the tradition of fishing. The tournament is also seen as a significant event in the Quintana Roo state.

The tournament will run from May 17th to 19th, with over 80 boats, each carrying four people, participating. It is open to local residents as well as national and international tourists. The captain's dinner will be held on the 17th, with the main activities starting at 6 am on the 18th and 19th.

"We invite all those interested in fishing to participate or watch this tournament, which has become one of the most important in the state," says the municipal official. The prizes range from 350,000 pesos for the first place, 235,000 for the second, and 130,000 for the third, with recognition for the fourth to seventh places, and surprise prizes for the eighth and ninth positions.

Participants from the United States are expected to join, showcasing their best reel techniques over the three-day event, while also enjoying the natural beauty of Quintana Roo's Magic Town.

"The goal is to preserve the tradition, but above all, to allow people to enjoy the event and discover the beauty of the municipality," adds the official. The event is also expected to boost local tourism, with a predicted hotel occupancy rate of 75 percent, increasing to 90 percent for various tourism services.

The first Isla Mujeres fishing tournament, named "Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña", was held in 2004. Since then, Isla Mujeres has become a key location for sport fishing in the Mexican Caribbean.

Pre-registration is available until the 17th at the Department of Tourism offices. The tournament is a men-only event, with each boat carrying a team of four sport fishermen.
