Starting next Wednesday, weather permitting, the Vector Control team will launch a thermal fogging operation in the areas most at risk of dengue outbreaks.
Simultaneously, Public Services workers will be removing discarded furniture, scrap, and other waste that could collect rainwater from homes and public spaces. This initiative will supplement the regular rubbish collection services that take place every Wednesday in various neighborhoods across the island.
Gerardo Ventura Lugo Moguel, the head of Vector Control in the municipality, noted that the recent rains could lead to a significant increase in mosquito populations. Although no new dengue cases have been reported, proactive measures are being taken to minimize the presence of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito species responsible for transmitting dengue.
Moguel announced that, starting next Wednesday, Vector Control will tentatively begin a thermal fogging operation in neighborhoods with a history of dengue cases or where a high number of mosquito eggs have been detected.
The areas to be covered include parts of La Gloria, Cañotal, Lol-Beh, Miraflores, Caridad del Cobre, Salina Grande, Caribeña, and Salina Chica. Moguel also emphasized the public's role in prevention, urging residents to wash, cover, flip, and discard potential mosquito breeding sites.
He underscored that community participation in cleaning yards and roofs accounts for 60% of all prevention efforts, making it a crucial part of the collaborative work between the island's residents, the municipality, and Health Jurisdiction Number Two.
Moguel further explained that the municipality contributes 20% to the prevention efforts by eliminating breeding sites through rubbish collection programs and daily garbage collection. Vector Control completes the remaining 20% with measures aimed at reducing the presence of adult mosquitoes.
