The joint efforts of Mexico and Belize's security forces are making headway in the battle against illicit goods trafficking across their shared border, which is naturally divided by the Hondo River. José Luis Tlatelpa Castillo, Commander of the eleventh naval zone, has reported that the coordinated actions of the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) and the Belize Defense Force have significantly curtailed the transportation of drugs, weapons, and other illegal items.
Commander Tlatelpa Castillo noted that illicit activities typically peak at night, with individuals using barges to transport illegal cargo across the Hondo River. However, combined operations have led to stricter surveillance at the most susceptible points. These proactive patrols have successfully deterred these activities. Continuous monitoring along the river has been instrumental in maintaining a visible presence that discourages illegal trafficking.
Mexican authorities have also increased inspections at the international bridge linking the two countries. This strategic location, often used for the transportation of both legal and illegal goods, is now under stricter control.
Commander Tlatelpa Castillo highlighted that these joint operations demonstrate the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling complex issues such as illicit goods trafficking. While the progress is promising, authorities recognize that illegal trafficking at the Mexico-Belize border remains an ongoing challenge. The region's geography, with its numerous natural crossing points and extensive border line, makes comprehensive surveillance difficult.
