In a recent public forum held at the Lázaro Cárdenas park dome in Playa del Carmen’s Colosio neighborhood, tensions flared over the proposed renaming of the Solidaridad municipality to Playa del Carmen. The event witnessed a heated exchange between Municipal President Estefanía Mercado and Alderman José Luis “Chanito” Toledo.

José Luis “Chanito” Toledo Medina is a notable political figure in Playa del Carmen. He is the son of Don Marciano Toledo Sánchez, a pioneer in the creation of the municipality and a key figure in the political and social life of Quintana Roo. Chanito has held various political positions and is known for his active involvement in local governance.

The initiative to rename the municipality aims to strengthen the identity of Playa del Carmen, a city renowned for its tourism appeal within the Mexican Caribbean. According to City Secretary Luis Herrera Quian, the process involves a series of citizen consultations, forums, and meetings to ensure the change reflects the collective will of the community. The proposal must navigate through the City Council and subsequently the State Congress before being subjected to public consultation.

The forum’s atmosphere became charged when Toledo arrived with a group of supporters, leading to disruptions during City Secretary Luis Herrera’s address. Toledo interrupted Herrera and subsequently confronted President Mercado in a confrontational manner. Despite the aggressive approach, Mercado maintained her composure, responding calmly to Toledo’s provocations.

The situation escalated as Toledo’s followers grew more agitated, resulting in a tense environment that eventually turned physical, even involving members of the media. Attendees began chanting for Toledo’s removal from the event.

The municipality has planned additional forums to discuss the proposed name change, including sessions at the City Theater and in Puerto Aventuras. These forums aim to gather diverse perspectives from the community to ensure that any decision made reflects the collective will of the residents.
