Landowners in Playa del Carmen staged a protest outside the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo, demanding an end to the encroachment on their territory. The alleged encroachers, however, claim they have been victims of assault during attempts to remove them from the land.
Protestors held up banners with slogans such as "The law is not politicized, it is applied" and "A united landowner community will never be defeated". They claim that the encroachers have already taken over 76 hectares of their land.
The landowners are calling for intervention from the Attorney General's Office, alleging that their previous lawsuits have been ignored and no action has been taken to halt the encroachment on their land, which is located south of Playa del Carmen. They have not ruled out the possibility of blocking the federal highway to ensure their demands are met.
The landowners claim that they inherited this land from their ancestors, the first settlers of Playa del Carmen. They believe their rights to private property are being violated as their land is being encroached upon and irregular settlements, such as Torres de Paz, are being established.
Meanwhile, César García, a lawyer representing the alleged encroachers, has lodged complaints of assault with the state's Attorney General's Office. He alleges that the municipal police have used intimidation tactics and have destroyed the makeshift homes the encroachers had built on the disputed land.
García stated, "I don't defend the encroachment," but condemned the methods used to address the issue, stating, "you cannot solve a conflict with an illegality," referring to the treatment the encroachers have received.
