Persistent rainfall in recent weeks has led to the formation of potholes and cracks in the asphalt on various streets in the city. A notable instance occurred on Calle 12 in the El Ejido neighborhood, where a fissure in the asphalt developed into a sinkhole over a meter deep.
Local residents were the first to report the pavement collapse. They estimated the sinkhole to be approximately a meter deep. In response, personnel from the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risks and Firefighters arrived to assess the situation. They confirmed the sinkhole's depth to be over a meter and speculated it might be a ventilation duct of a cave. This theory is plausible given the large cave area present in that part of the city.
After the team assessed the sinkhole and filed a report, the area was cordoned off with yellow tape for safety. Residents also placed branches inside the sinkhole to make it more visible, as it is situated in the middle of the street and poses a risk to unaware pedestrians or drivers. The responsibility now lies with the Public Services Directorate to conduct appropriate repair work. This is crucial to prevent the sinkhole from reappearing and to ensure the street is safe for travel.
