Playa Del Carmen authorities have secured an area on Pelícanos Street with 42nd street after a large sinkhole appeared on Friday morning. The sinkhole, measuring between 15 and 20 meters in diameter, took residents and tourists by surprise. It has significantly impacted the El Encanto beach club, causing the adocrete floor to sink and engulfing the club's sanitary facilities.
The sinkhole continues to expand, prompting authorities to cordon off the area for safety. Representatives from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) have visited the site to assess the situation and plan the next steps.
Initial investigations suggest that the sinkhole may be due to the area's natural terrain. Historically, the area was a mangrove region, and it is believed that the soil composition, combined with the characteristics of the former ecosystem, may have contributed to the collapse.
Fortunately, the sinkhole appeared during a period of low activity in the area, and no injuries or vehicle damage have been reported. Authorities continue to maintain the secured perimeter while conducting further studies to assess the risks and determine necessary mitigation measures.
