Laura Rojo Färber, a renowned photographer, has been appointed as the new head of the Maya Museum of Cancun (MMC). The decision was made by Diego Prieto Hernández, the general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). Juan Manuel Garibay López, the national coordinator of Museums and Exhibitions at the institute, stated that Rojo Färber's primary mission will be to enhance the preservation and promotion of the archaeological heritage of the Maya culture in Quintana Roo and its surrounding regions. This heritage is housed within the museum, which is situated in Cancun's hotel district.
A key part of Rojo Färber's role will be to foster stronger connections between the museum and the local community, particularly with younger audiences. This will be facilitated by the museum's proximity to the San Miguelito Archaeological Zone.
Rojo Färber is a highly qualified individual, having studied museography and museopedagogy at the Antonio Haghenbeck Cultural Foundation under the guidance of Lucio Lara Plata. She also holds a degree in Marketing from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. Beyond her academic achievements, Rojo Färber is a recognized photographer whose work has been featured in numerous exhibitions.
In addition to her experience in cultural management, Rojo Färber is also an award-winning poet. She received the 2023 Sasil Prize, awarded by the Citizen Council for Culture and the Arts of Quintana Roo. Upon her appointment, Rojo Färber expressed her commitment to the role, stating, "I will put all my effort into strengthening the museum's connection with the society of Quintana Roo and with those who visit the city of Cancun."
Margarito Molina Rendón, the director of the INAH Quintana Roo Center, expressed his confidence in Rojo Färber's ability to continue the work of the outgoing head of the MMC, Carlos Esperón Vilchis. He praised the museum's staff as a "compact, efficient, and committed team" and acknowledged Rojo Färber's training and experience as key factors in her ability to uphold the MMC's reputation as a cultural landmark in Cancun and Quintana Roo.
