The city council has plans to modernize the lifeguard towers at Cancún's seven public beaches this year. The Director of Civil Protection, Antonio de Jesús Riveroll Ribbon, has reported that planning and development for the project are currently underway to identify the necessary investment and equipment needed.
The primary goal of this modernization project is to enhance the safety of beach visitors and improve the working conditions for lifeguards. The project is in the planning phase, with the aim of defining the specific characteristics each tower should have, considering its location and unique requirements.
Currently, there are 11 towers distributed across the seven beaches and four access points managed by the Benito Juárez City Council. The project will decide the type of structures to be built, ensuring they meet national and international safety standards.
According to the Safety, Lifesaving and Aquatic Rescue Regulations of Benito Juárez Municipality, the structures can be adapted to suit their environment. The regulations stipulate that the distance between each tower should be a maximum of 300 meters, allowing for effective coverage of 150 meters on both sides.
The regulations also specify that the height of the towers should enable a clear view of the lifeguard's area of responsibility, from the beach to the sea. Additionally, the observation platform should be between 1.8 and 3 meters above the beach level to ensure a clear, unobstructed view and quick access for lifeguards.
The new tower designs will focus on improving the comfort and functionality for the lifeguards without compromising safety. Riveroll Ribbon added, "They will be a little different, but they will continue to meet standards. We want them to be functional and suitable spaces for lifeguards to perform their duties efficiently.”
The modernization of these towers is a significant step towards ensuring the safety of visitors and optimizing the working conditions of rescuers on the beaches of Benito Juárez.
