Farmers are sounding the alarm over the threat of locust swarms. While these swarms have not yet damaged crops in certain areas, farmers caution that the situation could spiral out of control if not addressed promptly.

José Filomeno Tejero Poot, head of the Yucatán Horticulturists Association, confirmed that horticultural production remains unaffected for now. However, he warned that if left unchecked, the locust swarms could multiply and wreak havoc on crops.

Tejero Poot criticized the authorities for their neglect, emphasizing the need for year-round measures to combat the insects and prevent them from developing the ability to fly in search of food. He cautioned that uncontrolled locusts could decimate all vegetable crops, significantly impacting the economy and production of the Yucatán countryside.
