Tourism service providers in Majahual are gearing up to welcome summer visitors. They anticipate a surge in sales and demand for their services during this period. A key attraction, the beaches, are currently free of sargassum, a type of seaweed. This is due to the joint efforts of federal, state, and Solidaridad municipal authorities who have installed a containment barrier to prevent the seaweed from reaching the shore.
"We anticipate having some of the cleanest beaches in the state," a representative said. "With the barrier in place and functioning well, we expect to keep the sargassum under control. This will allow visitors to enjoy our beaches without issue. We also expect this to attract more tourists and boost our local economy, which is still recovering from the Easter period."
The representative also noted improved communication and cooperation with the navy. This has led to the community having a greater say in decision-making, particularly in actions related to managing the sargassum. This has even resulted in an extension of the protection area.
The community is now hoping for a greater police presence in response to their requests. While Majahual is considered a safe destination, the community believes that increased surveillance is necessary, especially during the summer holidays.
"Those of us who live here can vouch for Majahual's safety," the representative said. "However, we believe that increased police presence is necessary for preventative measures. We want to ensure that if an incident occurs, there is someone to turn to and that tourists feel safe. It's worth noting that we have not had any incidents during holidays or weekends. But as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure." The representative added that the only complaints from tourists have been about high food prices.
