Major hotels and businesses in Costa Mujeres and Riviera Maya are championing recycling efforts. These initiatives result in approximately 700 tons of waste being repurposed daily. Sandy Burgos, CEO of Buma company, shared that they have been advocating for solid waste separation for over a decade to bolster a more environmentally friendly economy. Their primary focus has been on accommodation centers.

The goal is to encourage waste separation and collection. Currently, this initiative is only active in three locations: Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Burgos stated, "This task is designed to enhance environmental preservation."

Hotels are adopting measures to collect recyclable materials such as plastic and glass on specific days. This is part of their environmental initiatives and programs, which also include the management of organic waste. Efforts are being made to address the issue of sargassum, a type of seaweed, by collecting and repurposing it, primarily as a sustainable raw material.

Burgos expressed the company's intention to expand its operations to Cancun to further support businesses and advance sustainability efforts. She clarified that their company is local and its activities are confined to "non-hazardous solid waste management and remediation of areas damaged by non-hazardous waste."

Currently, companies are reluctant to accept sargassum because it requires drying and tends to accumulate. To address this, they are initiating a project to manage the large volumes of seaweed that wash ashore. Burgos explained that an increasing number of large companies are committed to waste separation programs and environmental improvement, resulting in actions that benefit the environment.
