A recent report from the Kumon Institute in Cancún reveals a concerning academic situation in Quintana Roo. After analyzing over two thousand school diagnostic tests this year, the report found that 80% of basic level students are up to three school cycles behind. This educational lag is a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the 2024-2025 school year, the state's basic level student enrollment reached 338,815. Claudia Romero, a counselor and instructor at the Kumon Institute, explained that these assessments are based on international standards. They reveal that between 30% and 40% of students are advancing through grade levels without mastering the necessary skills for effective learning.

Romero further explained that many students, particularly those in the sixth grade and high school, struggle with reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning. This issue has been worsened by the federal government's decision not to fail any student during the pandemic. As a result, students are moving through grades without gaining essential basic competencies.

This educational lag is not limited to public schools. In the northern region of Quintana Roo, particularly in municipalities like Benito Juárez and Solidaridad, 40% of educational centers are private. Many of these institutions are experiencing similar challenges. Romero also highlighted that a lack of family involvement is another factor impacting school performance.

The report also found that many parents do not dedicate time or show the patience needed to support their children's education. Kumon, which has been present in the state for over 22 years and operates three centers in Cancún and Playa del Carmen, plans to expand to the southern region of the state. It aims to open 11 new educational centers in municipalities such as Othón P. Blanco, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and Bacalar.
