Mangrove Destruction in Sisal Alerts Environmentalists

Residents of Sisal, Yucatán have raised concerns over the widespread destruction of a significant mangrove area. This region serves as a nesting ground for turtles and a refuge for migratory birds.

Visual evidence, including images and videos, show a group of individuals decimating the mangrove. It remains unclear whether the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) or the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) have taken any action.

The environmental community is urging people to report these activities and demand action from authorities to halt this environmental destruction. Local residents have noted that this group has already cleared over a hectare of mangrove, stretching from the dock to the coastal dune, in the past week.

Sisal's community Facebook page has also expressed their outrage over this environmental damage, stating, "They are destroying Sisal. They are destroying our beaches. A group of people is destroying the coastal dune for their personal gain – enough with the environmental destruction."

Speculation suggests that the destruction is the work of a group of Sisal port residents intending to commandeer the land to set up beach huts in federal areas.
