Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa and Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz have unveiled the newly renovated fishermen's pier in Puerto Morelos. The project, described as a "historic social justice initiative", aims to fulfill a long-standing debt to the local community. The pier has been a significant request since the first administration and was a key commitment made to the people of Puerto Morelos.

The refurbishment project cost a total of 6,698,486 pesos, funded by the Trust for the Management of the Environmental Sanitation Fee (DSA). In its first year, 2024, the DSA carried out projects worth more than 46 million pesos. The mayor emphasized the transparency of the government in using tax funds for the benefit of the community, noting that this is the first major project financed by the trust.

Governor Lezama praised Mayor Merari for her transparency in managing the DSA resources. She emphasized that the funds are not for current expenses but are intended for community benefit projects. The governor also highlighted that the project reaffirms the commitment to the progress and well-being of the residents of Puerto Morelos, many of whom rely on the Caribbean for their livelihood.

The mayor described the pier as more than just a structure; it is a symbol of hope for the families of fishermen and the nautical sector. It represents a step towards responsible tourism development and is a testament to what can be achieved through unity and shared prosperity.

The renovated pier is 113.50 m long and 4.20 m wide, supported by 90 sapodilla piles of water-resistant wood. The piles are 40 cm in diameter with varying heights between 9.50 and 12.40 m. The decking is made of 2×8 inch planks.

The original structure, built in 1965 to replace an earlier one from the 1920s, had become worn over time and damaged by hurricanes, particularly Hurricane Zeta in October 2020. Mayor Merari explained that the decision to refurbish the pier quickly led to the realization that it could not be accomplished alone. Collaborative networks were formed to process applications such as obtaining the Destination Agreement from the Federal Government, which allowed them to take control of the polygon to carry out the work.
