Mario Delgado Carrillo, the Minister of Education in Mexico, has recently outlined plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into the country's National Education System. This initiative would involve the use of AI across all institutions, processes, and individuals involved in delivering educational services nationwide. Delgado Carrillo believes that AI could be instrumental in modernizing Mexico's education system, with a focus on teacher training, improving connectivity in low-income areas, and developing innovative learning platforms.

Delgado Carrillo suggests that these measures could boost the quality of education and help bridge the gap between students. He points out that AI could help teachers manage their time more effectively, enabling them to design more efficient teaching strategies. This could free up more time for teachers to focus on the human and socio-emotional development of their students, a key component of their overall education. In addition, Delgado Carrillo notes that students could benefit from access to platforms that offer personalized learning, materials tailored to their specific needs, and interactive virtual mentoring.

He believes that this approach could significantly benefit marginalized communities and students with disabilities by providing them with high-quality technological tools. Delgado Carrillo made these comments during the UNESCO conference "AI and Educational Transformation in Mexico", which was organized to celebrate International Education Day 2025. He emphasized the potential of AI to make education more inclusive and accessible, while also stressing the need to consider the ethical implications of its use.

Delgado Carrillo stressed that the use of AI should adhere to principles such as equality, democratic inclusion, and collective construction. He also highlighted that technology should be used to enhance knowledge and improve educational conditions, without compromising individuals' dignity, privacy, or rights. He also noted that while technical skills like technology mastery and cybersecurity are important, developing human skills like creative thinking, adaptability, leadership, and empathy are equally vital. He believes these skills complement the ethical and responsible use of AI in education.

In order to address the ethical and technical challenges of AI, Delgado Carrillo announced the establishment of an observatory in partnership with the National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES). This organization will monitor international best practices and evaluate how to effectively incorporate AI into the Mexican education system.

Lastly, Delgado Carrillo highlighted that the National College of Professional Technical Education (Conalep) already offers six career paths related to data science, AI, and other emerging technologies such as cybersecurity and electromobility. He sees this as an example of how Mexican education can adapt to the demands of the digital age. Delgado Carrillo concluded by emphasizing the need to harness the benefits of AI to transform education, rather than resisting its integration and dealing with the potential negative consequences.
