José Alfredo Contreras, the Mayor of Bacalar, has announced that construction of a new Marriott hotel in Bacalar will commence at the end of February. This follows meetings with Marriott executives at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur).

The new hotel will be situated in Bacalar's coastal area, close to the 'Cenote Azul'. It will feature 60 low-density rooms, reflecting a commitment to sustainable development and preservation of the natural surroundings, including the renowned "lagoon of the seven colors". Although the hotel won't be directly on the lagoon's shore, it will offer an exclusive beach club for guests.

The construction phase is expected to create around 500 jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy. Contreras also noted that approximately 100 visits from tour operators took place during Fitur, with many expected to visit Bacalar in the coming weeks.

The Mayor hinted at potential new investment projects in the near future, driven by increasing tourist interest in the region. This is particularly true following the opening of Ichkabal and the launch of the 'Tren Maya'.

In September 2024, José González, Vice President of Marriott International's development in the Caribbean and Latin America, discussed upcoming openings and brand changes that the hotel company planned for the region.
