Maya Train Project Accelerates with New Cargo Wagon Deal

The Maya Train project, a major Mexican rail initiative, has finalized the purchase of 510 cargo wagons from companies 'Brameit', 'Aviatek' and 'Grupo Fravic'. This is in addition to the 42 passenger trains that the project plans to operate. The first delivery of these cargo wagons is expected to begin in August.

The state-owned company "Tren Maya, S.A. de C.V." has made a payment of over 2 billion pesos for these cargo wagons. The order includes 300 tank cars, 100 gondolas, 50 vans, 50 hoppers, and 10 intermodal platforms. The new equipment will start to arrive before the end of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's term and will continue to be received by the incoming President, Claudia Sheinbaum, with the final delivery deadline set for October 31, 2025.

The payment to suppliers will be split into two installments. The first installment of 1.466 billion pesos will be paid in the fiscal year 2024, and the second installment of 628 million pesos will be paid in 2025. The cargo system is expected to subsidize passenger transport and stimulate regional economic growth by providing connection centers and multimodal merchandise transfer sites. It will also link with the interoceanic corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and potentially, in the future, with Central America.

Each hopper will cost 3.07 million pesos, with a total cost of 153.9 million pesos. These will be delivered in blocks of 20 units in August 2025, and 15 units in May and August 2025.

The gondolas, which will be used to transport bulk materials such as minerals, coal, metals, and scrap, will cost 3.7 million pesos each, with a total cost of 317.1 million pesos. They will be delivered in three stages in June 2024, May 2025, and August 2025.

The vans, with a capacity of 40 tonnes and a length of 60 feet, will be used to transport products that require protection from the elements, such as auto parts, food, appliances, plywood sheets, and aluminum boats. Each van will cost 4.02 million pesos, with a total cost of 201.4 million pesos. These will be delivered in three stages in November 2024, May 2025, and August 2025.
