The Maya Train, a popular interurban transport service, has seen a significant rise in passenger numbers, especially on the Cancun-Tulum route. This information comes from the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF). In the first month of the year, the train carried 28,785 passengers. By August, this number had risen to 80,891 passengers.
Carlos Barreda, a railway transport expert, pointed out that the Cancun-Tulum route is in high demand. The local population primarily uses this route as an alternative to public transport. This usage contrasts with the initial concept of the Maya Train, which was primarily intended as a tourist service.
Barreda explained, "In the future, we may see the Maya Train operating in two distinct ways. On some sections, like between Cancun and Tulum, it may function as an interurban railway. On others, it may serve as a tourist train around archaeological sites." He also noted that tourism has not been the main driver of demand on this route. Many tourists who arrive in Cancun have travel packages that include airport-hotel transfers.
The Maya Train was initially projected as a tourist train that could transport up to three million international visitors per year, according to a statement from the previous government in March 2019. The service offers different rates for foreign tourists, Mexicans, and local residents. However, the local population has been the primary user to date.
Barreda identified ticket sales as a potential area for improvement for the project. Currently, 80 percent of ticket sales are made at ticket offices. The introduction of prepaid cards and online platforms could enhance the accessibility and convenience of the service. This would meet the needs of both interurban users and tourists in the region.
As interest in interurban transport grows, the Maya Train continues to evolve to meet the needs of both locals and visitors. It is balancing its role as a public transport service and a tourist attraction in the southeast of Mexico.
